For 80% of patients, liver cancer starts with liver disease. Dr. Finn – professor of medicine in the division of oncology at University of California – underlines that we need to raise awareness of chronic liver disease. There is great underappreciation for the importance of screening for patients who have chronic liver disease and cirrhosis specifically.
”When patients are found at advanced stages, we now have better treatments, and they can be treated,” he added. “But, finding disease early is the difference between treatment and cure.”
Together with frequent screening, there are more options now to do an active medical care for patients with hepatic cirrhosis. The liver is a highly regenerative organ, but only if it’s still healthy enough to do so and doesn’t have extensive scar tissue. Once cirrhosis is present, your liver’s regeneration becomes very limited.
Here stem cells step in and prove to be effective: numerous clinical studies showed that the liver can be regenerated with the help of stem cell transplantation also in patients with hepatic cirrhosis. This therapy helps patients to return to a better quality of life, and for some of them even to avoid the liver transplant operation.
